Should I dismantle a sofa to make collection cheaper?
Do not cut upholstered seating or expose its filling. Send photographs first and ask for suitable preparation instructions.
01 / Good to know
Why upholstered seating is different
Official guidance covers waste upholstered domestic seating that may contain persistent organic pollutants. Sofas and padded chairs can need a different handling and disposal route from an unupholstered wooden table.
02 / Good to know
Do not cut up the foam or fabric
Cutting or breaking a sofa to make it smaller can create a handling problem. Keep the item intact, show existing damage and ask the collector what containment or preparation is appropriate.
03 / Good to know
Do not assume every soft furnishing is the same
The official scope is item-specific. Tell the team whether the item is a sofa, chair, mattress, bed base or headboard, rather than calling everything “furniture”. The collector should confirm the appropriate route.
04 / Good to know
Include the access route in the enquiry
A separate disposal route is only one part of the job. Sofa beds, recliners and upstairs rooms can change lifting requirements. Photograph the full item and the narrowest point on the way to the van.
